This thread is for you to share your ideas on how to upcycle or recycle products at home to give them a new life.

Rather than throwing something away, do you ever ask yourself what else you could do with it or how you could use it for something else? Not only can it save you money but it will save you purchasing more items that will eventually end up in a landfill or worse yet the ocean or on land harming wildlife

Feel free to add your ideas below! You might help inspire someone else and will be helping by playing a small part by reducing unnecessary waste.

    Tip to cut food waste

Best Before Dates Vs Expiry Dates

Most of you probably already know but I thought this would be good to put here in case someone is not aware in future. Canned foods have  a Best Before and Expiry date. Did you know that the best before date is not expiry but the date at which the manufacturer believes the product may lose some quality?. Most times the food is completely fine to eat and safe to eat. The best before date is only to tell you that there may be some really minor changes to the food. It's usually not true and the food is usually just fine and still fresh and edible. You can cut waste by ignoring the best before dates and only focusing on the actual expiry dates. Some foods , for example pickles and honey will last for years before ever going bad at all as they are preserved. Pay special attention to any canned meats but use your judgement too, does it smell or look off? if not, it's probably fine to eat. For other non meat products that are canned and which can be stored in a cupboard, the food is probably fine to eat even 1-2 months after the expiry date. Stop paying attention to 'Best Before' but when in doubt )(If you think it might be 'off' it's best not to risk it.)

    Bulk Cooking and Freezing

Many meals can be cooked in batches and frozen for long periods of time. It can be good for people who are disabled or unwell or for people who work long shifts, as you will only need to heat up the foods when you get home. What are some ideas of things you can cook and freeze? there are lots of meals that will last for months once frozen. Soup is a good one and can make a healthy lunch or snack on days where you are too busy to cook or just feeling like you need something easy. Investing in a big freezer can help save you money and again can mean fewer trips are needed to the supermarket, saving you petrol on top of reducing your carbon footprint. It also helps you to lower your risk of exposure to the coronavirus as you will be making fewer trips to supermarkets or if not, will mean you are spending less time in the supermarket looking for frozen meals - or answering the door to delivery people for fast food. Win-Win for you

Making a big batch of Lasagne is always a good idea. You could also save this for when family visit so you are not spending hours cooking before hand. It tastes just as good when heated up again

An empty prescription bottle can become a handy, travel-sized first aid kit with enough space for some band-aids, gauze pads, and ibuprofen.

Cut dryer sheets in half, and use them twice.

Reuse dryer sheets to dust off electronics. Because dryer sheets reduce static cling, they can keep electronics free of dust longer.

Wipe dull scissor blades with a used dryer sheet to sharpen them and get clean cuts again.

Help remove glitter nail polish by soaking a used dryer sheet in nail polish remover.

Eliminate hat head and flyaways by running a used dryer sheet on hair.
