    Omen: portent Empty Omen: portent

Post by Dragon Tue Jan 23, 2024 11:11 pm

An omen (also called portent) is a phenomenon that is believed to foretell the future, often signifying the advent of change.

It was commonly believed in ancient times, and still believed by some today, that omens bring divine messages from the gods.

These omens include natural phenomena, for example an eclipse, abnormal births of animals (especially humans) and behaviour of the sacrificial lamb on its way to the slaughter.

Specialists, known as diviners, variously existed to interpret these omens.

They would also use an artificial method, for example, a clay model of a sheep liver, to communicate with their gods in times of crisis.

They would expect a binary answer, either yes or no, favourable or unfavourable.

They did these to predict what would happen in the future and to take action to avoid disaster.

Though the word omen is usually devoid of reference to the change's nature, hence being possibly either "good" or "bad", the term is more often used in a foreboding sense, as with the word ominous.

The word comes from its Latin equivalent omen, of otherwise uncertain origin.

    Omen: portent 627px-Omens_in_the_Sun

Manuscript of the mid-nineteenth century, possibly of Sgaw Karen origin, shows various appearances in the sun, the moon, clouds, etc., and indicates the primarily bad omens these appearances foretell.

Explanations in English were added to this manuscript by a nineteenth-century American missionary.

    Myrabella - Own work

Halley's Comet's appearance in 1066 was recorded on the Bayeux Tapestry.

ISTI MIRANT STELLA literally means "These ones are looking in wonder at the star".

National Geographic translated it in a 1966 article about the tapestry as "These men wonder at the star".

The four-leaf clover has always been considered a symbol of good luck in the Irish culture.

According to the legend, the leaves of a four-leaf clover represent hope, faith, love, and a fourth for good luck.

It is a charm that will protect against evil

It will ward off evil, witchcraft, and bad omens

Good fortune in any ventures they attempt

The luck of the clover only works if it is kept out of sight and never passed to someone else

Chances of finding a four-leaf clover are 1 in 10,000.

The odds skyrocket to 1 in 1,000,000 for a five-leaf clover.

    Cloud Formations

Some people believe that cloud formations can be omens in and of themselves.

Have you ever looked at a cloud and seen something that gave you a sign?

Called aeromancy, the use of clouds for divination is a popular form of augury.

Rain clouds can symbolize darkness and gloomy feelings, but on a sunny spring day, they can be positive symbols of cleansing.
