Also known as slime eels, hagfish are primitive fishes.

They have five hearts, no jaws, no true eyes and no stomach.

They have poor vision but a very good sense of smell and touch.

Hagfish live in burrows on the seafloor and locate their food by smelling and feeling as they swim.

They prey on small invertebrates living in the mud; they also scavenge dead and dying fish.

Hagfish are noted for their unusual way of feeding — they slither into dead or dying fishes and eat them from the inside out, using their "rasping tongue" to carry food into their funnel-shaped mouths.

    By Vincent Zintzen,

The seal shark Dalatias licha (a–c) and the wreckfish Polyprion americanus (d–f) attempt to prey on the hagfishes.

First, the predators approach their potential prey.

Predators bite or try to swallow the hagfishes, but hagfishes have already projected jets of slime (arrows) into the predators’ mouth.

Choking, the predators release the hagfishes and gag in an attempt to remove slime from their mouth and gill chamber.

This hagfish was observed at a depth of 970 meters (3,182 feet) during the ninth dive of the 2023 Shakedown + EXPRESS West Coast Exploration expedition.

The holes running along the side of the hagfish are where it produces mucus as a protection against predators.

Hagfish have been known to produce as much as six gallons of mucus!

The hagfish is a slime-emitting ocean-dweller that's remained unchanged for 300 million years--and it shows.

It has a skull (but no spine), velvet smooth skin, and a terrifying pit of a mouth that’s lined with rows of razor-sharp teeth.
