Astronomers have performed photometric and spectroscopic observations of B2 1420+32, a blazar with a collection of ‘changing-look’ features.

Blazars are powerful active galactic nuclei (AGN) with relativistic jets pointing toward the observer.

Their jets span distances on the million light-year scales and are known to impact the evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters in which they reside via the radiation.

These features make blazars ideal environments in which to study the physics of jets and their role in galaxy evolution.

    Blazar emission reaches Earth

Gamma rays (magenta), the most energetic form of light, and elusive particles called neutrinos (gray) formed in the jet of an active galaxy far, far away.

The radiation traveled for about 4 billion years before reaching Earth.

NASA's Fermi Finds the Farthest Blazars

Despite their youth, these far-flung blazars host some of the most massive black holes known.

That they developed so early in cosmic history challenges current ideas of how supermassive black holes form and grow.

Blazars constitute roughly half of the gamma-ray sources detected by Fermis Large Area Telescope (LAT).

Astronomers think their high-energy emissions are powered by matter heated and torn apart as it falls from a storage, or accretion, disk toward a supermassive black hole with a million or more times the sun’s mass.

A small part of this infalling material becomes redirected into a pair of particle jets, which blast outward in opposite directions at nearly the speed of light.

Fermi’s Large Area Telescope (LAT) observes the entire sky every three hours.

In this animation, gamma rays (magenta) from the blazar jet strike Fermi’s LAT.

Also produced in the jet with the gamma rays are neutrinos (gray), ghostly particles that can strike -- and can even pass completely through -- Earth.
