May’s full Moon reaches its peak on Wednesday, May 26.

This full Moon will be the closest full Moon of the year, making it the second of two supermoons.

Plus, it will coincide with a total lunar eclipse in some areas.

May’s full Flower Moon reaches peak illumination at 7:14 A.M. (EDT) on Wednesday, May 26.

The Cree names Budding Moon and Leaf Budding Moon celebrate the awakening of local flora, which really begin to leaf out now in many areas.

Similarly, Planting Moon (Dakota, Lakota) marks the time when seeds should be started for the farming season ahead.

Two supermoons occur in 2021—the first was April’s Pink Moon and the second will be May’s Flower Moon.

When the full Moon appears this month, it will be ever-so-slightly closer to Earth than it was in April, meaning that May’s Flower Moon will be the biggest and brightest full Moon of the year—technically speaking.

To the naked eye, May’s full Moon won’t actually look any bigger or brighter than April’s, since the Moon’s distance from Earth differs by less than 100 miles between April and May.

On average, supermoons are about 7% bigger and about 15% brighter than a typical full Moon.

A total lunar eclipse is really three eclipses in one.

    May 26, 2021

The event begins when the full Moon enters the Earth’s outer shadows—its penumbra (a penumbral lunar eclipse).

It then begins to enter Earth’s inner shadow—its umbra—and as it does so it begins to turn red (a partial lunar eclipse).

Once the whole of the Moon is inside the umbra that’s totality—the Moon will have turned completely red, and will stay that way for 14 minutes and 30 seconds.

The entire event then goes into reverse, with the Moon exiting the umbra, then the penumbra.

Penumbral lunar eclipse 08:47-09:44 UTC (57 minutes – full Moon drops in brightness)

Total lunar eclipse (totality) 11:11-11:25 UTC (14 minutes 30 seconds – full Moon is reddish).
