Did someone witness a replay of an earlier accident ? Image Credit: CC BY-SA 3.0 Simon Burchell

A chance sighting of a car accident by a member of the public spawned an urban legend that endures to this day.

Britain's roads and motorways are certainly no stranger to tales of the unexplained, with stories of phantom hitchhikers and tormented apparitions being commonplace along some stretches of road.

One of the most peculiar such sightings occurred on December 11th, 2002, when a member of the public called the police to report a car accident - a vehicle had been seen losing control and leaving the road on the A3 near the emergency slip road at Burpham.

When police arrived at the scene they were initially unable to find any sign of a crash, however it didn't take them long to discover a Vauxhall Astra in a ditch nearby, obscured by the undergrowth.

Disturbingly, the remains of the driver were also discovered at the scene.

What made the tragic discovery all the stranger however was the fact that the car and the victim had seemingly been lying there undiscovered for over five months.

The deceased turned out to be a man wanted for a robbery that had taken place in July of that year.

So if the crash had occurred five months before, how did the witness see the car leaving the road ?

Could they have witnessed a ghostly replay of the accident ?

To this day, no definitive explanation has ever been found.

A few times on one stretch of road here in town where a man was struck down by a car and killed, You could see him step out into the road in front of the car. It would always happen around 8pm in November every single time I drove down that road. Reminded me of this. I believe it was his apparition re-playing the event

Apparitions and spirits are different in that an apparition is a re-play, like a memory imprint that appears/manifests as a ghost.

I used to live down the road from Burpham and know this road well. There were loads of road accidents here and this is a well known incident.

    Oh wow Nightlight

Yes.. I personally believe this person was seeing a replay of the event. It’s highly unlikely they’d have waited five months to report being a witness right?
