China's Chang'e 4 probe lands on 'dark' side of the moon

China has made history by landing the Chang’e-4 spacecraft on the far side of the moon, in a quest to better understand the composition and condition of the lunar surface. The China National Space Administration released a statement on Thursday saying the lander and rover had touched down, making it the first human-made object to reach the region notoriously difficult to navigate. As the far side always points away from Earth, China has to use a second spacecraft, in orbit, to send and receive signals which would otherwise be obscured by the moon. The ambitious feat comes almost one month after the spacecraft was launched, on 7 December 2018. Image: NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University TheMercury
