Sunland Baobab - A Bar Inside a Hollowed Out Tree

Sunland Baobab is a well-known enormous baobab tree in South Africa. It is one of the largest baobabs in South Africa with a circumference of 47 meter, or 33 meter, depending on who you believe, and a height reaching 19~22 meter. Regardless of the actual figure, everyone agrees that it is the widest tree on the entire continent. It is so big that there's room enough for a small pub inside. The Sunland Baobab is understandably, one of the area's most popular attractions.

Besides its remarkable dimensions, the baobab is also one of the oldest trees on earth. Carbon dating has estimated it to be around 6000 years old.

The Tzaneen area in the Transvaal in South Africa is famous for its rich fertile soil and old cycad forests, but one tourist attract ion seems a little out of place, the Baobab bar.
In 1992 the van Heerden family began to transform the big tree into a pub. Built into the famous bulbous trunk of the boabab, the bar is named the Sunland Pub.

Apart from the distinctive shape of the tree, this baobab is far from ordinary. It has been measured as the widest baobab in the world. The tree is 46.8 metres in width and was carbon-dated by a tree expert who believes it is at least 6000 years old.

It does however house something even more extraordinary – a fully functioning pub, complete with seating and a bar serving draft beer and wine. There’s even a dartboard attached to its knobbly interior.
