rare magnetic propeller in a binary star system Empty rare magnetic propeller in a binary star system

The star system, referred to as J0240, is only the second of its kind on record.

It was identified in 2020 as an unusual cataclysmic variable—a binary system consisting of a white dwarf star and a mass-donating red star.

Normally, the compact white dwarf star collects the donated gas and grows in mass. In J0240, however, the fast-spinning, magnetic white dwarf rejects the donor's gas and propels it out of the binary system.

Two White Dwarfs Merge After Million+ MPH Whirl

Two white dwarfs called RX J0806.3+1527 or J0806 come together to create the smallest orbit of any known binary system (321.5 senconds, or less than 5 minutes).

Gravitational wave energy increases as the two stars get closer.

The Hubble Space Telescope has detected silicon (a rocket planet element), in a white dwarf's atmosphere.

It is the result of asteroids being ripped apart by the gravity of the dead star and impacting other debris (white flashes in the animation).
