Starlite: The Mysterious Material that Could Not Burn Empty Starlite: The Mysterious Material that Could Not Burn

Imagine the applications of a material that could resist temperatures of 10,000 degrees Celsius.

That’s the temperature of the surface of the sun or the blast of a nuclear bomb.

Well, one man by the name of Maurice Ward did just that in 1986.

His invention of a special plastic could withstand even a nuclear flash that would otherwise melt a thick piece of steel in the laboratory.

Ward’s granddaughter named the product Starlite.

The problem is that his creation never came to market.

As a matter of fact, he kept his formula under such tight wraps that when Maurice died in 2011, the mysteries of the Starlite material died with him.

The mysterious substance was based on a combination of 21 polymers and copolymers with some added ceramics.

In this form, Starlite could easily withstand temperatures beyond the wildest of imaginations without giving off any toxic fumes or smoke.

Additionally, its strength and durability supposedly intensified when tested.

As strong as it was, being able to resist a nuclear flash and at least three times the melting point of diamonds, it was said to be flexible and able to be molded into various forms.

News of the Starlite material reached the producers of the BBC programme, Tomorrow’s World.

In March of 1990, the show demonstrated Starlite in action.

They first treated an egg with Starlite.

Then an oxyacetylene blowtorch at 1200 degrees Celsius was put on the egg.

The flame could not do any damage to it.

Not only was the eggshell unburnt, but the yolk inside was still raw even after a constant exposure of five minutes.

The presenter of the show, Peter Macann, turned off the torch.

He picked up the egg with his bare hand, cracked the egg, and demonstrated to shocked viewers that Starlite was highly effective as a heat barrier.

The inside of the shell was only about 35 degrees Celsius – barely warm.

Maurice Ward Starlite The Great Egg test

Maurice Ward demonstrated that a compound he had developed exhibited unique properties and would provide protection against extreme temperatures.

He demonstrated his material, which he called Starlite, by painting on a raw egg, playing a 1500c flame on the egg and then to the general amazement, cracking the egg and showing that it remained uncooked - Starlite had protected it from the heat.

Following the demonstration there was tremendous interest in Starlite from Governments, NASA, Boeing etc etc and Maurice slid away from public gaze.
