The Sacred Crocodiles of Bazoule

Bazoule, in Burkina Faso, is a sprawling lakeside village around 30 kilometers from the capital Ouagadougou, with a very unique tradition—for many generations residents of this village have been living in harmony with more than a hundred ferocious crocodiles that live in the village pond, the same pond where children swim and bath and the womenfolk fetch water from.

Generations ago the ancestor crocodiles saved the village from a famine and since then the people of Bazoule call them the sacred crocodiles and treat them with respect.

Tourists from all over travel to witness this unique tradition in Bazoule. They get a chance to ride on the crocodiles' back and feed them with chicken, specifically from Bazoule. It's quite a phenomenon.
