Move over Area 51 - the United States now has another, even more secretive base in the Nevada desert.
Situated on the Yucca flat, the base, which is run by the National Nuclear Security Administration, is so secretive that hardly anyone knew it existed - not even defense industry experts.

According to reports, the facility is part of the Nevada National Security site and is used by various government agencies to test out unmanned aircraft and to develop counter-terrorism techniques.

Located just 19km from Area 51, it was originally built as a nuclear testing ground in the 1950s.

According to imagery analyst Tim Brown, the layout of the base suggests that it has been used to test remotely piloted aircraft such as the Predator and Reaper reconnaissance drones.

Consisting of a single runway and a building complex, the base was captured on camera recently by Google Earth which uses satellite imagery to build up a complete map of the planet's surface.

"We have controlled airspace and that gives them opportunities to test various types of platforms," said National Nuclear Security Administration spokesman Darwin Morgan.

"We do a wide variety of work for others - supporting people with sensor development activities."

A government spokesperson has said the facility’s controlled airspace and extensive sensor system also allow for what are called “sensor development activities

Area 6 was initially developed in the 50s as a location for testing nuclear devices underground, but it was reportedly updated in 2005.
